The article outlines the UK’s digital planning transformation, from the military origins of Ordnance Survey mapping to today’s open data, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), web-based dashboards, and 3D virtual city models. It explains how accessible geospatial data supports planning decisions, especially where heritage, ecology, flood risk, and protected landscapes are involved. Digital tools also assist environmental and visual impact assessments, using datasets such as LiDAR, DEM, vegetation, and hydrology. Cloud-based platforms improve collaboration across complex projects, while online dashboards, planning portals, virtual workshops, and 3D virtual exhibitions make public participation more accessible. Overall, digital planning improves transparency, coordination, design quality, and decision-making.
